Northern Cross Country Championships, Knowsley Safari Park

The outstanding individual performance of the day came from Hatti Archer in winning the silver medal in the SW race. There were also good team performances with the U13G winning the Northern title and the U15G taking silver.

Hatti Archer increased the pressure on the leading pack on the second lap of the SW race to move clear and take 2nd in 31:30. Zanthe Wray continued her fine season, finishing 13th in 32:57. Nicky Squires ran strongly to finish 35th in 34:41 and Hannah Whitelam, in her first cross country race in a year, finished 91st in 38:23 to bring the team home in 6th.

Steve Bayton led home the SM with a fine run in 7th in 42:30. Dave Archer had another fine run to finish 15th in 43:16. Rob Little was also well to the fore, finishing 22nd in 43:58. Matt Hobbs was 70th in 46:48 with Zal Mellard 114th in 48:56 and Nick Barber in 128th in 48:30. Dave Sprot continued his return to fitness in 131st in 49:40 with Gareth Phoenix 227th in 52:59 and Joe Gratton, making a welcome return to racing, 233rd in 53:14. The SM finished 7th overall.

Imani Wilson had another strong run to finish 12th in the U20W race in 23.50. Mary McCarthy continued her return to finish with a good run in 35th in 25.45. Charlotte Slack ran strongly to finish 44th in 26.57 with Ellie Crownshaw 47th on 27.28. The U20W were 5th in the team competition.

Wyatt Hill had a fine run to take 18th in 29:12 in the U20M race. Josh Taylor Brown, on his return to racing, was 45th in 30:46 with Josh Walton 64th in 37:21.

In the U17M race, David Lewis was 99th in 23:39 and Christian Snelgrove 129th in 25:14.

The U15G squad produced another very strong performance to finish 2nd in the team competition. Jodie Hill led home the team in 11th in 16:41. Eve Crownshaw was 19th in 17:13 with Laura Trask close behind in 21st in 17:19. Holly Booker ran strongly to take 54th in 18:04 and help clinch the silver medal. May Quinn worked hard to finish 84th in 18:39.

Taylor Hill was our only representative in the U15B race, finishing 28th in 15:09.

Zena Hartley gained vital places in the final stages of the U13G race, finishing 32nd in 13:02 and helping the team take the Northern title. Emily Hunter worked hard to finish 115th in 14:14.

Dylan Stevens gained valuable racing experience in the U13B race, finishing 61st in 12:33.

Sheffield Schools Cross Country Championships, Graves Park

Taylor Hill had a commanding win in the JB race. Ben Shaw ran strongly to take 4th with Joe McDadd finishing quickly in 6th and Tom Atkinson in 9th.

Jodie Hill won by a convincing margin in the JG race. Holly Booker was in contention in the chasing group, eventually finishing 6th with May Quinn 7th, Zena Hartley 8th and Tati Wilson 9th.

In the IB race, David Lewis finished well in 4th.

Eve Crownshaw won the IG race with Laura Trask, after a fall on the bank, 2nd. Ellie Rogers was 9th.

Billy Hinchcliff was 4th in the SB race with Jack Crownshaw 5th.

Mary McCarthy made a welcome return to racing, finishing 3rd in the SG race. Caitlin Tevendale was 5th.

Sheffield Schools Cross Country Team

Although the official results have not been posted from the Sheffield Schools Cross Country championships, the following athletes from the group have been selected to represent Sheffield at the South Yorkshire Schools in Rotherham on Saturday 4 February 2017.

PB for Andy at BMC 3k, EIS, Sheffield

Andy Heyes improved his pb for 3k to 7:59.18 in finishing 2nd at the BMC indoor meeting. Sitting in the pack for much for the race, Andy produced a fast last 200m only to be denied the win on the line.

Yorkshire Cross Country Championships, Lightwater Valley

The winter racing season began with some fine team and individual performances at the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships.

The senior men claimed the Yorkshire title in an exciting struggle with Leeds. The U15G also secured the Yorkshire title with a dominant team performance. Imani Wilson won the U20W gold, Jodie Hill took silver in the U15G race and Zanthe Wray produced her best ever senior performance to win bronze the the senior women’s race.

In addition, a significant number of individuals gained selection to represent Yorkshire at the Intercounties championship:

The senior men were involved in a close struggle with Leeds throughout the 10k race. Steve Bayton produced a strong run to move through to 4th in 34:19. Dave Archer paced his race well to take 8th in 34:45 and Bertie Houghton was close behind in 34:54. Connor Milnes ran well to take 18th in 36:04 with John Birch running strongly in 27th in 36:55.  Wyatt Hill had a good run to finish 27th in 36:50 and clinch the team gold.

The B team finished 5th, illustrating the strength in depth in the senior men’s squad. Zak Mellard was 37th in 37:15 with Gavin Keight 38th in 37:17, Pete Hodges 44th in 37:33, Matt Hobbs 46th in 37:38, Sam Peters 50th in 37:46dave Sprot 63rd in 38:33 and Gareth Phoenix 94th in 40:09.

Zanthe Wray produced an outstanding run to take the bronze medal in the senior women’s race in 31:09. Nicky Squires ran strongly to finish 8th in 31:49. Ellie Crownshaw was 34th in 35:40 and Charlotte Slack in 44th in 36:21 brought the team home in 4th place.

Imani Wilson, setting off with the seniors and near the front of the race throughout, won the U20W gold with a fine performance in 23:15. Caitlin Tevendale ran strongly throughout to finish 12th in 28:23.

Cameron Bell, also setting off with the senior men, clinched his place in the Yorkshire U20M team finishing very strongly in 5th in 28:14.

The U17M finished 6th with Bill Hinchcliff 16th in 21:31, David Lewis 26th in 22:43 and Christian Snelgrove, in his first Yorkshire championships, 36th in 25:06.

Saskia Huxham, our only representative in the U17W race, ran strongly to finish 10th in 18:10.

Taylor Hill paced his race well to move through on the final lap to clinch his place in the U15B Yorkshire team, finishing 8th in 14:23.

Jodie Hill looked strong throughout the U15G race, winning a fine silver medal in 13:54. Eve Crownshaw ran very well to take 5th in 14:25 and Laura Trask produced a fine run to finish 7th in 14:26 (given the same time as 6th) to clinch the team gold.

May Quinn produced another strong performance to finish 19th in 15:29 with Holly Booker close behind in 22nd in 15:41. Tati Wilson brought the B team home in 7th, finishing 39th in 16:34.

In the U13G race, Zena Hartley finished strongly to take 13th in 9:56 to help the B team take bronze. Emily Hunter worked hard throughout to finish 43rd in 10:34.
